About Us

Introduction

Since our incorporation in 1987, we realised that we would have to be different if we are to maintain our position - and we are pleased to have achieved this. Our ethos has been to invest significant and continuous training in our staff as this adds value to not just our company but more importantly to our clients as well.

Our ongoing improvement has enabled us to bid for and secure contracts from the likes of Norfolk County Council, Suffolk County Council, Norwich City Council and Anglian Water Services Limited. In addition we also work with other developers such as Twigden Homes Limited, Lafarge Aggregates Limited, Balsam (UK) Limited and Biwater Europe Limited, all major players in the market place.

Commitment to Quality

We have continued to lead the field in attaining British Standards and are now one of only a handful of national companies to have achieved this milestone. The company has gained certification via the Zurich Certification Board of BS EN ISO 9001:1994, and by Independent European Certification of both the BS EN ISO 14001:1996 and OHSAS 18001: 1999. We are delighted to have now achieved BS EN ISO 9001:2000 on 6th January 2004. The quality symbols on the left of the screen are clickable so that you can see our original certificates.

Investor In People

Even before gaining certification in February 2000 we were described as a natural IIP company, which was further born out by us attaining the Eastern Daily Press Staff Care Award in October 1996. This award was particularly pleasing in that a member of staff nominated the company for the award.

We have a number of supervisors and trainee supervisors all of whom have considerable experience. Training is an important part of the company's ethos and employees at all levels are encouraged to attend college courses or otherwise engage in continuous development to realise their goals. The ethos begins on site where regular ‘tool box’ talks take place. It is hoped these fuel our employees desire for learning.

Our Team

The company has three directors, John Farley founder, Steve Francis contracts, and Paul Varvel who joined the board when Eastern Project Management Limited was bought out.

John Farley - M Inst CES, AMIHT, came to Norfolk in 1980 and worked for another civil engineering company before starting Dunnella Limited. His background is Quantity Surveying but he is now involved with the overall running of the company and the administrative aspects.

Paul Varvel - Like Steve is Norfolk born and bred and has had 41 years in the industry. Paul is our estimating and purchasing director and he is invariably involved in other contractual matters.

Steve Francis - Norfolk born and bred worked alongside John at their previous company and did not join Dunnella until 1994. He is now the contracts director and is responsible for ensuring Health & Safety is maintained on all sites. He is currently doing a college course which should see him attain a degree in Civil Engineering.

History

Initially Dunnella was involved with the construction of roads, sewers and groundworks for housing developers, most notably Alfred McAlpine Homes East Limited. Still finding our feet, we undertook grounds maintenance on these sites, which included landscaping, turfing and fencing. Having set up a successful profile, we were then invited by other major players to tender for more specific civil engineering projects both as a main contractor and as a nominated subcontractor.

Our investment in training gave us a wide advantage in that our clients were able to communicate with any member of staff on site and obtain a valued response.

The company's profile now has the added dimension of being able to offer rapid solutions to problems, instead of becoming entrenched in contractual negativity which only delays projects and makes progress slow.

The company has continued to grow and expand its client base, through the acquisition of Eastern Project Management Limited during the early part of 2001. This move has enabled the company to become more involved with dock and harbour work and sea defence contracts, adding yet another aspect of civil engineering to the company's growing portfolio of capabilities.

As a direct result of this move, major players such as Associated British Ports are now listed as a client reference. The company has an impressive list of references and boasts a significant proportion of its workload year on year as repeat business.
