Construction of Sludge Storage Tanks

This is another good example of a client led scheme which we won in tender, but which changed considerably when construction began, owing to site and ground conditions. This contract is included in the list of examples, because we acted as principal contractor and had to deal with six nominated subcontractors working on the scheme at the same time. The six were principally mechanical and electrical contractors; this is an area we have become more and more involved with in the recent past as clients expect us to be able to offer the complete package.

The contract was to provide a sludge storage capacity, using two steel coated tanks and all associated pipe work, wet well and mechanical and electrical facilities.

Our design team were put to the task in accommodating the location of the tanks, in that they were to be sited next to a densely wooded area and no trees were overly affected by the works. In the initial excavations, we located significant tree roots, which had to be protected. Further in construction, the joint ladder arrangement caused us problems, owing to level issues on site. Once again we were able to work in partnership with our client and through good relations were able to overcome all the issues as they arose.
