Whitlingham Lane Rowing Lakes
Environmental WorkIn complete contrast to general civil engineering, this environmental contract helps to demonstrate how we can assist in environmental issues linked to existing water courses or ones under construction. Led by our client Lafarge Aggregates Limited, this scheme is part of a significant reinstatement contract evolved from the extraction of aggregates in the river valley at Trowse, outside Norwich. The plan is to produce on final extraction two 1500m rowing lanes and we were tasked to produce the landing stages at either end of the lakes. The photographs show various stages during the construction, but in essence, the mini piles were driven at specific centres and then gabion baskets placed between them, filled with reject stone, obtained from the pit located near to the scheme. A filter membrane is then placed in front of the baskets and the piles capped with a timber edging. The soil is then brought back to behind the baskets and a granite Type 1 path is placed along the edge of the detail. Plants will then be placed in the baskets to improve the bank stability and ensure the river bank feeling in time. The company has been further involved with this project since the completion of the initial phase, in that we have constructed fishing jetties, bridges, further footpaths and additional car park facilities.
