Whitlingham Sewage Lagoons
Construction of 3 giant sewage lagoons
In an effort to keep pace with the demands of clients, the company realised the importance of being able to offer design and construction packages. This scheme demonstrates that to maximum effect, in that we were involved with every aspect of civil engineering in order to meet the demands of our client.
After being awarded the scheme against competition and prior to signing a contract, we held a meeting on site with the client, which included representatives from all departments who would use the facility. A schematic drawing was produced, which was signed by all parties and this formed the template for the contract.
The photographs shown are aerial shots taken after completion of the works, which included the construction of three sludge storage lagoons, each with a capacity of 1.5 million gallons, and associated pipe work and an access road which starts at the main works.
The lagoons are lined and have stirring facilities built into the structure. The lagoons all have sumps to assist with cleaning and ability to mix the liquid, prior to removal either by tanker from purpose built tanker points or by pipeline back to the works. The site road was constructed using redundant filter media material from the Whitlingham site, as the sub-base material and thus saved the client a significant sum in not having to import stone for this purpose. This also demonstrates the companys' ability to use recycled material to good effect within a project.
The contract was run very much as a partnership operation, where we looked to provide all the requirements of the client and to their specifications, whilst at the same time ensuring the cost stayed within the initial budget.
